Part 6: Teenagers and Beyond (Approx. 140cm Tall and Up or 4'7"+) - Embracing 7/8 and Full Size Guitars

Updated: Apr 22

Transitioning to Musical Maturity

As children enter their teenage years, their physical size and musical capabilities often indicate they’re ready for a guitar that can fully express their growing talent and ambition. Moving to a 7/8 or full-size guitar marks a significant step into more serious musical study and performance.

Choosing Between 7/8 and Full Size Guitars

The right choice depends on several factors, including the teenager’s physical comfort, musical style, and personal preference:

  • 7/8 Guitars: Slightly smaller than full-size guitars, 7/8 models are great for teenagers not quite comfortable with the leap to a full-size instrument. They provide a comfortable playing experience while delivering a sound that's close to that of a full-size guitar.

  • Full Size Guitars (4/4): The standard for adults and serious musicians, full-size guitars offer the widest range of tones and dynamics. Teenagers ready for this size will benefit from the full spectrum of guitar capabilities, especially if they’re pursuing advanced studies or performances.

Supporting Your Teen’s Musical Journey

Here are some tips to ensure a smooth transition and continued growth:

  • Encourage Exploration: With a larger guitar, teenagers can explore a broader range of musical styles. Encourage them to experiment with different genres and playing techniques.

  • Invest in Quality: At this stage, investing in a higher-quality instrument can be highly motivating and can significantly impact their progress and enjoyment.

  • Seek Opportunities for Growth: Look for opportunities that challenge them musically, such as joining a band, participating in competitions, or performing publicly.

Making an Informed Choice

Selecting a 7/8 or full-size guitar involves careful consideration to match the instrument to the teenager's needs:

  • Ergonomics and Comfort: Ensure the guitar fits the player comfortably, allowing for extended practice and playing sessions without strain.

  • Sound Quality and Features: Choose a guitar that offers the sound quality and features suited to the teenager’s musical interests and goals.

  • Future-Proofing: Consider the longevity of the instrument. A good quality guitar can last many years and carry them through various stages of their musical journey.

Looking Ahead

Transitioning to a 7/8 or full-size guitar is about more than just size—it’s a commitment to their ongoing development as a musician. This step reflects their readiness to tackle more complex music and express themselves with a richer, more nuanced sound.

In Part 7, we will dive deeper into the nuances of acoustic and electric guitars, helping young musicians find the perfect instrument to express their unique musical voice.
